By the way, i try to install windows 7 from dvd and have only usb 3.0 ports for keyboard and mouse. by altering the iso as mentioned above, i have enabled the keyboard and mouse at the first stage of installation; however, in the second stage (when i need to input user name, etc.), neither keyboard nor mouse work anymore.. The driver entered the mainline kernel on version 3.9, but even before that, downloading the drivers from the the asix websites, compiling and loading the driver manually should work fine. unfortunately this is not the case for me on ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 on a dell xps 13 developer edition.. This work is licensed under a creative commons attribution-sharealike 3.0 unported license.. future versions of this will be on my blog.. most of the time, ubuntu will automatically have drivers available (via the linux kernel) for your computer's hardware (sound card, wireless card, graphics card, etc.)..
Ubuntu uses a graphical user interface called jockey or "additional drivers" to manage and install hardware drivers that are not natively supported by ubuntu. to open it hit alt + f2 and type jockey-gtk .. Details on how the ubuntu driver package can be unpacked and modified for other distros is covered in this article. note: this is a reference driver for supported displaylink
